Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) in Modern Power Grids
As the global energy transition accelerates in 2026, Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) have become critical for managing the instability caused by renewable energy sources like wind and solar. FACTS are power-electronic based systems that provide real-time control over the "Impedance," "Voltage," and "Phase Angle" of AC transmission lines.
Static Var Compensators (SVC) and STATCOMs: These are the "Shunt" devices of the FACTS family. They provide dynamic reactive power support to the grid. A STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator) acts like a high-speed battery for the grid’s voltage, instantly injecting or absorbing reactive power to prevent "Voltage Sag" or "Swell" when a large wind farm suddenly stops producing power due to a change in weather.
Series Compensation (TCSC): Thyristor-Controlled Series Capacitors allow grid operators to "virtually shorten" a transmission line by reducing its electrical impedance. This enables existing power lines to carry significantly more electricity (up to 30% more) without needing to build new physical infrastructure,…
